New Restaurants in Downtown Los Gatos: The Block Behind the Boom

A Los Gatan report described chef Coskun Abik in early August in the gutted dining room at 25 E. Main St., where contractors were laying new flooring. Abik has already built a small résumé of Bay Area restaurants, Blind Butcher SF, Dunya Bistro, Moka Coffee SF, and he's bringing a Greek-Anatolian menu to this address next. The report quoted him saying, "It's a great opportunity to bring a couple of my touches."

What Abik may not have said out loud, but what becomes obvious once you start tracking addresses instead of just menus, is that his new restaurant isn't opening into empty space. It's opening into a very specific, very small stretch of downtown that has been absorbing nearly every new restaurant in Los Gatos for the past eighteen months. If you already live here, you don't need to drive anywhere for the new food. You need to walk about three minutes in either direction from the Main Street and N. Santa Cruz Avenue corner.

One building, three new tenants in under two years

Start with the La Cañada Building, the landmark structure in the Los Gatos Historic Commercial District that used to house the meeting hall of the Odd Fellows Lodge back in the early 1800s. Its ground floor has been home to Polenteria, chef Yvonne Khananis's gluten-free Italian spot, for years. But the rest of the building has turned over three times since late 2025.

Second Story opened on an upper floor late last year. Petals Creamery, the rolled-ice-cream and milk tea shop, moved in downstairs this summer. Heritage Pub and Chop House, from Los Gatos natives Walker and Kristi Pearce-Percy, held a soft launch for friends and family in mid-September, with a full public opening that had been timed for the end of September. The space had sat vacant for seven years after its last tenant, the nightclub and restaurant known as LGBG, closed. The pub and chop house has a classic menu of fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash. Its banquet room and back patio bring total capacity to 180.

Three tenant changes in one building over eighteen months is not typical turnover for a small downtown. It's a building that's become the test case for whether downtown Los Gatos can support this many concepts stacked on top of each other.

The other end of the block is doing the same thing

Walk two minutes from the La Cañada Building and you land on College Avenue, where Dar Restaurant & Bar opened this spring. Dar is the Los Gatos expansion for brothers Milad and Esam Shaqir, who built a following with Tamra Mediterranean Grill in nearby Saratoga first. Their Los Gatos version pulls from the Levant, Italy, and Morocco, with a full bar, indoor dining room, and a patio built around a fireplace.

Abik's Greek-Anatolian restaurant at 25 E. Main St., a few doors down, will be the second Mediterranean-focused concept to land on this same strip in a single year. His menu is built around Maras pepper and olive oil.

Here's what all of this looks like laid out by address:

Business Location Status as of late September 2026
Polenteria La Cañada Building, ground floor Long-running, chef Yvonne Khananis
Second Story La Cañada Building Opened late 2025
Petals Creamery La Cañada Building Opened summer 2026
Heritage Pub and Chop House La Cañada Building, upper floor Soft launch mid-September, public opening at month's end
Dar Restaurant & Bar 11 College Ave. Opened spring 2026
Chef Coskun Abik's Greek-Anatolian concept (name pending) 25 E. Main St. Lease began August 2026, construction underway
Pergamon Bistro 309 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Alcohol license filed early 2026, opening date not yet announced
Vicinity Downtown, exact address pending Fine-dining concept announced in January 2026

Two more concepts are in the pipeline for the same corridor. Pergamon Bistro, a Turkish restaurant from owner Seyyat Zira, has filed for an alcohol license at 309 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, placing it near existing tenants Oak & Rye and Pedro's, though no opening date has been set. Vicinity, a fine-dining concept first reported by the Mercury News in January, is expected to join a downtown already anchored by Forbes Mill Steakhouse and the champagne-and-caviar pairings at Tasting House on Village Lane.

People behind the new openings

The Pearce-Percys grew up here. Walker graduated from Los Gatos High School's class of '97 before flying C-5s for the Air Force Reserve, and Kristi describes Los Gatos as the community that raised her. The Shaqir brothers and Abik are also bringing restaurant experience to their new Los Gatos concepts.

The businesses opening around Main Street and N. Santa Cruz Avenue aren't gambling on demand that doesn't exist yet: the corner already has a built-in crowd. The Los Gatos Farmers' Market runs every Sunday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Plaza Park, right at Main Street and N. Santa Cruz Avenue, with more than 40 local farmers and food producers setting up stalls. That market has been pulling residents to this exact intersection for years, long before any of these restaurants existed. The new wave of openings is building lunch and dinner options around a walking pattern that was already there every week.

The weekend that just put all of it to the test

This past weekend gave the corridor its biggest stress test of the year. The Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival, produced by the Kiwanis Club of Los Gatos since 1971, ran over the weekend on the Civic Center Lawn with more than 200 artists, food trucks, and live music. Proceeds from the festival fund scholarships for local high schoolers and other community programs, which is part of why it's stayed a fixture on the calendar for more than fifty years. Earlier this month, KCAT TV and Radio's Oktoberfest, now in its fifth year, also filled the Civic Center Lawn with its own crowd, a fundraiser that supports the station's youth media programs.

Stack those two events on top of a farmers market that runs every single Sunday regardless of what else is on the calendar, and downtown Los Gatos just spent most of September funneling foot traffic through the same handful of blocks where Heritage Pub and Chop House, Dar, and Abik's still-unnamed restaurant are all either freshly open or about to be. If any of these concepts were going to find out quickly whether the neighborhood can support them, this was the month.

What it actually means if you already live here

You don't need to track a dozen new openings across a sprawling suburb. You need to know one building and two side streets. Start at the farmers market on a Sunday morning, walk past Purple Onion Café near the Los Gatos Creek Trail entrance for coffee, catch brunch at Southern Kitchen if the line hasn't wrapped the block yet, and by early evening you're within a few minutes' walk of Dar, Heritage Pub and Chop House, PintxoPote's tapas menu at 424 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, and Abik's still-unnamed Greek-Anatolian restaurant. That's most of what's new in Los Gatos dining right now, all inside a loop you can walk in under fifteen minutes.

The pattern is worth watching over the next few months. If Pergamon Bistro and Vicinity land on the same stretch, as their addresses and positioning suggest they will, downtown Los Gatos won't have a restaurant scene so much as one very busy block doing the work of an entire district.

If you're weighing what a home near this stretch of downtown is actually worth, or curious how a corridor like this affects value on the surrounding streets, Edelino Chen tracks these shifts block by block and is glad to talk through what it means for your specific address.
